Scope and Content

This collection comprises an ms notebook, containing notes on lectures, written by Joyce B. Waymont during her time as a midwifery student (October 1936), relating to the management and care of infants, including the prevention and treatment of diseases, breastfeeding, the evidence of prematurity in babies, the causes of prematurity, vitamins, jaundice, how to treat minor ailments of newborns, teeth and teething, birth injuries and cleft palate, together with three ms registers of cases, including the name, age, address and pregnancy history of each patient that she attended in childbirth throughout her subsequent career as a midwife at Deal and Dover in Kent and then around the area of Ely and Cambridge in Cambridgeshire (21 July 1937-26 November 1956), and finally in Twyford, Berkshire (11 December 1956-15 May 1958 and 11 May 1965-15 September 1965), also containing details of the hour of her arrival, the presentation of the infant on birth, the date and hour of the birth, the sex of the child, whether the child was born living or dead, whether the child was premature, the name of the doctor if called, if there were any complications during or after labour, the date of her last visit, the condition of the mother and child on her last visit and then any further remarks, such as the administration of drugs and whether forceps were used during the delivery.

Joyce B. Waymont (fl. 1920-1970) was a midwife who practiced at Deal and Dover in Kent and then Cambridge and Ely in Cambridgeshire, before settling in Twyford, Berkshire.
