Papers of Hilda Groves 1937 - 1968

Scope and Content

Four case books, compiled by Hilda Groves, recording the births that she attended during her time as a midwifery student in Rotherham (July 1937 - July 1938) and as a midwife primarily in the North Yorkshire, Hull, Newcastle and the North East of England (August 1937 - August 1956), containing patient notes, details of labour and her observations. Additionally included are seven photographs of Hilda and her sister, Marjorie, as children and Hilda as a nurse at Rise School, two newspaper photographs (of retirement parties) Hilda and Marjorie (also a nurse) three certificates comprising Hilda's baptism certificate, her St. John Ambulance Home Nursing certificate and her certificate for the Central Board of Midwives examination and one letter of reference for a future post from a doctor at Ely Road Convalescent Home dated October 1940.

Administrative / Biographical History

Hilda Groves practised midwifery and nursing for over thirty years between 1937-1968. Trained as a midwife in Rotherham, Hilda practiced as a midwife primarily in North Yorkshire, Hull, Newcastle and the North East, and served as school nurse at Rise School.

Custodial History

Donated to the RCM Special Collection of Deposited Papers by the great-niece of Hilda Groves in March 2012; a further case register was added to the collection in January 2013 (RCM/2013/6).
