This collection comprises an ms register of cases attended by Mrs E. R. O'Brien whilst training to become a midwife at the the City Maternity Hospital in Stoke-on-Trent (22 October 1936-1 April 1937), as a domiciliary midwife in Northampton (19 February 1938-2 September 1940) and then at the Leicester and Leicestershire Maternity Hospital (15 January 1941-22 February 1939), recording the name, age and address of each patient, the number of previous labours and miscarriages, the presentation of the infant on birth, the date and hour of the birth, the sex of the child, whether the child was born living or dead, whether the child was premature, the name of the doctor if called, if there were any complications during labour, the date of her last visit, the condition of the mother then, the condition of the infant then and finally any other remarks, together with a further ms register of cases, compiled by Mrs O'Brien, during her time at the Birmingham Maternity Hospital (15 January 1957-16 March 1959), including the same information as above, as well as the expected date of delivery, whether antenatal care was provided by a clinic, midwife or doctor, whether the child was breast fed and if any drugs were administered during or after labour. Both volumes contain annotations made by Mrs O'Brien (circa. 1990).
