Lewtas was born in Manchester on 10 November 1917 and was educated at Manchester Grammar School and the University of Manchester. After qualifying, Lewtas was orthopaedic house surgeon at MRI and served as a captain in the RAMC. He was medical registrar at Stockport Infirmary and Salford Royal Hospital before being appointed radiological registrar at Ancoats Hospital Manchester in 1951 and in 1952, at MRI. Lewtas later became radiologist to United Sheffield Hospitals. He was married to Dorothy Hey (the daughter of Wilson Hey, see MMC/2/HeyW) who qualified in medicine at the University of Manchester in 1942 and was house surgeon at Crumpsall Hospital Manchester.
