Mather, the son of John de Ville Mather, followed his father as a practitioner in Todmorden. After studying at Oxford and Manchester, Mather held resident appointments at MRI and Prestwich Hospital Manchester before serving in the Royal Navy as a neuro-psychiatric specialist. Mather was later appointed consultant psychiatrist at Crumpsall Hospital Manchester, North Manchester Hospital, Manchester and Salford Skin Hospital and Dobroyd Castle Senior Approved School Todmorden, where his father had also worked. Mather was also lecturer in psychiatry at the University of Manchester. He was a member of the British Academy of Forensic Sciences and the Royal Medico-Psychiatric Association.
