Edward Hill studied at Owens College and took his MB ChB from Victoria University in 1900. After a house post at MRI, he went into general practice. In 1909 he was appointed assistant anaesthetist at MRI and he remained at MRI for the rest of his career. He was the first president of the Manchester and District Society of Anaesthetists in 1945, and when this body merged to become part of the Manchester Medical society. He continued to serve as president of it Section of Anaesthetics. Hill was also editor of the British Journal of Anaesthesia. A Quaker, Hill served on the management board of Dalton Hall, a Quaker hall of residence in Manchester (of which he was a former student member)
