Jeans studied medicine at Owens College and qualified in 1893. He joined the Royal navy as a surgeon in 1894 and rose to the rank of surgeon rear-admiral. From 1919-22 he was head of the naval hospital at the Cape of Good Hope, and from 1922-6 he headed the naval hospital at Plymouth. He wrote several books about he Navy and published his autobiography The reminiscences of a naval surgeon in 1927.
