Administrative / Biographical History

Mangnall was born in Bolton, Lancashire, on 10 April 1928. His maternal grandfather, John Taylor ([1860?]-1908) was a pharmacist and retailer at Bolton Royal Infirmary and was noted as a botanist and bonesetter [Taylor may have been related to the Taylor Family of Whitworth, see MMC/2/Taylor]. Mangnall was educated at Bolton School, Cambridge and Manchester. He held junior appointments at MRI and Bolton Royal Infirmary before being appointed orthopaedic registrar to Biddulph Grange Hospital in 1957. He held orthopaedic appointments at Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Victoria Infirmary Glasgow, Addenbrooke's Hospital Cambridge and Swansea Hospitals before being appointed consultant orthopaedic surgeon to West Suffolk Group Hospitals. Mangnall was a fellow of MMS and of the Royal Society of Medicine.
