Meachim studied medicine at the University of Manchester and held resident appointments in Manchester at St Mary's Hospital, MRI and the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. He later settled in general practice in Matlock, Derbyshire, where he was honorary medical officer to the Whitworth Hospital, Darley Dale.
