In 1783, Holland, aged 17, was apprenticed to Charles White for three years. He later practised in Knutsford. He was uncle to Elizabeth Gaskell, and his character was drawn as 'Dr Gibson' in Elizabeth Gaskell's Wives and Daughters. His son Henry Holland also entered the profession and was made a baronet. Holland died after 1855.
