John Kershaw was a medical pupil at Manchester before being appointed medical officer of Royton, near Oldham. Kershaw bequeathed £50,000 in his will of 1909 for the provision of a hospital in Royton to be free and open to all inhabitants of the town. The Dr Kershaw Cottage Hospital was opened in 1931 and is now the Dr Kershaw's Hospice.
