Jones was educated at the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh and graduated at Edinburgh in 1875. In 1876 he joined Manchester Eye Hospital as a house surgeon, and eventually went on to become senior surgeon. In 1877 he was awarded an MD by the University of Edinburgh for a thesis on diseases of the eye. As well as having an extensive private practice, Jones held appointments at Bolton Infirmary, Barnes Home Industrial Schools and the Warehouse and Clerks Schools. He was a former president of the Manchester and Salford Sanitary Association, and he was involved in the movement to promote crematoriums. He was also a patron and president of the Welsh National Society of Manchester.
