Born as Norman Kletz on 27 July 1895 in Bolton, he was educated at Manchester Grammar School and Manchester Medical School, where he was awarded many academic distinctions. From 1915 to 1917 Kletz held resident positions at MRI and after qualifying was appointed assistant surgical officer. In 1917 Kletz went on active service, serving in France and Belgium before being appointed as assistant bacteriologist to the Scottish Command in Edinburgh. 1920 saw Kletz return to MRI as pathological registrar and assistant director of the clinical laboratory, later being promoted to medical registrar and resident medical officer. In 1923 Kletz entered consultant practice, in which he soon built up a large and successful practice, and the same year was appointed physician at Ancoats Hospital Manchester where he taught many medical students. From 1924 Kletz organised and directed a pathological service and a medical service at Stockport Infirmary. He was also consultant physician and honorary pathologist to Park Hospital, Davyhulme, from 1928 until 1932. Kletz was a member of MMS, Manchester Pathological Society, and the Pathological Society of Great Britain. In 1934 Kletz was appointed consultant physician to MRI and part-time lecturer in medicine at the University of Manchester. He changed his name by deed poll in 1943 to Kletts. He was struck by a serious illness in 1945, but returned to medical practice after four years' convalescence, and was appointed adviser in medicine to Manchester Regional Hospital Board. He died suddenly on 14 October 1955.
