McEvedy was born in Christchurch, New Zealand and trained at Guy's Hospital where he was also house surgeon after having served as a captain in the NZMC in 1919. He spent some time as a general practitioner in Oldham before being appointed resident surgical officer to Ancoats Hospital Manchester in 1922. By 1924 he was honorary surgeon to Ancoats Hospital, a position he held until his death. He devoted much of his attention to varicose veins, piles and hernia, and was one of the first to establish a special clinic for varicose veins and piles. McEvedy also had a private consultancy practice in the city and was on the staff of the Warrington Infirmary and Stretford Memorial Hospital. He was a founder member in 1927 of the Surgical Travellers Club and in 1950 was president of MMS. McEvedy was regarded by some as the best operator that Guy's has produced, but was not well known.
