Newton graduated in medicine from the University of Manchester in 1929. In 1930 he was appointed Sharpe Scholar and moved to University College London. By 1939 he was acting head of the department of physiology at UCL. In 1944 he was appointed professor of physiology at Liverpool University, before moving to Edinburgh University in 1948, but died shortly after this appointment. Newton's main interest was in the physiology of pregnancy and he authored and co-authored several books including Sex and internal secretions and Introduction to physiology.
