Marsden was born in Yatton, Somerset in 1921 and received her medical education at King's College London and Cambridge. Marsden held paediatric house appointments in London before coming to Manchester where she was resident medical officer at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital for a number of years. She was also clinical medical officer to the Community Service Centre and clinical assistant to the department of child health at the University of Manchester. She was married to Henry Basil Marsden, also a paediatrician (see above).
