Administrative / Biographical History

Herd was a graduate of Edinburgh University, taking his medical degree in 1902, having received a degree in education in 1894. He was appointed an assistant school medical officer in Manchester in 1909. His work concentrated on children with educational problems and he undertook examinations under the Mental Deficiency Act. In 1930 Herd was made school medical officer for Manchester Corporation. He was a member of the BMA's Committee on Mental Deficiency and Physical Education, and was a member of Manchester Medical Society. He published several papers on children with learning difficulties.
