Charles Porter qualified in medicine at Dublin and Cambridge (he was later a barrister-of-law of Grey's Inn). He was an assistant medical officer of health for Kent, Medical Officer of Health for Stockport (1893-98) and Medical Officer of Health for Shropshire. In 1902 he became Medical officer for Health in Johannesburg, and spent the rest of his life in South Africa. He was a very active figure in South African public health, and served as president of the South African Medical Congress in 1922.
