Kauntze was educated at Manchester Victoria University and London University and held resident appointments at MRI and in Salford before joining the West African medical staff in Nigeria in 1912. From 1919 to 1932 Kauntze was senior bacteriologist and deputy director of laboratory services in Kenya Colony, before being promoted to director of medical services in Uganda. In 1941 Kauntze was appointed assistant medical advisor to the Colonial Officer and in 1944 became chief medical advisor. He was awarded a number of honours and was also involved in the Bureau of Hygiene and Tropical Diseases. Kauntze died on 4 November 1947.
