Lee's interest in occupational medicine began when he served in the RAF but he gained wide experience in general practice before entering the field. In 1956 Lee was appointed area medical officer for British Rail in Derby. In 1958 Lee became lecturer in occupational health at the University of Manchester and was appointed professor of occupational health in 1972, being made emeritus on his retirement. Lee was also consultant in occupational health at MRI. From 1965 Lee was editor of the British Journal of Industrial Medicine, he published many scientific articles and also wrote on the history of industrial medicine. Lee was a member of MMS and a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.
