Laing studied medicine at Aberdeen University and was resident medical officer and district obstetrical surgeon at St Mary's Hospital Manchester before settling in general practice in Cheetham Hill, Manchester, where he was later joined by Clifford Yule Laing, possibly his son. Laing died between 1927 and 1930.
