Irving was born in Huddersfield on 15 February 1879, the son of John Irving MB. He studied medicine at Owens College from 1897, graduating in 1904. While a student, he produced many cartoons for the Manchester Medical Students Gazette, later published as University sketches: consisting chiefly of drawings... drawn whilst a student(Manchester 1904). Later in his career he was a surgeon in London at the Brook War Hospital, Woolwich and a medical adviser to the Sun Insurance Company. He retired from practice in 1929 and died in 1932.
