Scope and Content

A reply by Baxter to the papers against his book The Safe Religion (1657). Closely written in quarto. ‘Ad § 1. 2. 3. 4. The Booke which you take notice of now, I wrote about ten yeares agoe; In which I spake my thoughts of your Religion, & gave my Reasons of those thoughts.’Signed: ‘Your truly loving Brother in Christ our Common Head. Baxter’s The safe religion. Or Three disputations for the reformed catholike religion, against popery. Proving that popery is against the Holy Scriptures, the unity of the catholike church, the consent of the antient doctors, the plainest reason, and common judgment of sense it self (1657). This work was directed against Roman Catholicism which he believed at that time to be making significant advances in England. See also Corr 364 and 365. Also Corr 297, Rel i.116, iii.16-17; 61.
