Scope and Content

Papers prepared by Baxter for the Savoy Conference, on the Liturgy. Baxter’s answering, point by point, of the Bishops’ replies (items 364-365) to ‘The Exceptions against the Book of Common Prayer’ [Rel. ii. 316-333]. Item 129 not printed in Rel. but in ‘An Account of all the proceedings’ (1661) pt. ii, pp. 2 ff.

Closely written on both sides of large folding sheets, with broad margins. the last page begins thus. f 440v: ‘The Reply to your Preface. The straine of these Papers we filled is like to perswade many that your designe is not the same with oures:’. The heading here given has been struck out, and many corrections and additions are made; one is a Greek and Latin passage (at f 430v) by another hand. The conclusion seems to be at f 435, which page is headed ‘The Concessions’.

Custodial History

Black records that as 'the pages not having been numbered, it is difficult to ascertain their true order, which seems to have been rescued by the binder.' This seems incorrect as prior to the breaking of the volumes for conservation purposes the papers seemed to be bound out of sequence.
