Answers by Baxter to Bishop Morley’s Strictures. The documents inserted by Sylvester in the third part, between the printed numbers ‘§256, §257’ include Treatises xxii, 363 (2-4). These papers follow a passage in the printed Autobiography, there numbered ‘§256’ but it stands as ‘270’ (altered to ‘259’) in the original manuscript, Treatises xxii, 363 (1). Though there is no mark referring to these papers, yet they are mentioned as follows – ‘270. During this session, the Earle of Orery desired me to draw him up in briefe the termes and meanes… And because I have inserted before so much of such transactions, I will have annexed my Proposalls, with his Strictures and my Reply.’ (Treatises xxii, 363 (1), f 96) Treatises xxii, 363 (2-3) were copied by W. Baxter and corrected by the Author: the rest consists of the rough draughts.
Includes: ‘My Lord I returne you this paper with an answer to the Strictures; not with any hope of Agreement with the author: ffor whoever he is, I have no hope of prair or healing by him, or by his consent, according to the Principles & rigor here expressed.’
