Scope and Content

The preface and abstract of 'The nonconformists plea for peace: or An account of their judgment. In certain things in which they are misunderstood: written to reconcile and pacifie such as by mistaking them hinder love and concord' (1679) by Richard Baxter. Closely written by Baxter in quarto.

Note

Baxter replied to those critics who argued that the nonconformists were preparing for rebellion in his The second part of the nonconformists plea for peace in 1680. Later that same year he answered Edward Stillingfleet’s sermon, printed as The unreasonableness of separation(1681), which was aimed against him and others, in Richard Baxter's answer to Dr Edward Stillingfleet’s Charge of Separation (1680) and he also replied to John Che(y)ney’s The Conforming Nonconformist (1680) in his The defence of the nonconformists plea for peace, or An account of the matter of their nonconformity, against Mr. J. Cheney’s answer (1680).
