Scope and Content

A political primer by Baxter which he notes is prompted by the publication of 'Unity Pursued' by John Humfrey. Bater's primer is addressed to 'Nationall Church makers: That Ignorance of errors make them not plagues to Common wellfare, by prinicipling them for Tyranny or Confusion. Written most unwillingly By. Ri: Baxter, constreined by the unresistible Imposition & Importunity of the Author of UNITY PURSUED as a Letter to him.

Note

Argent notes: 'John Humfrey, like Baxter, favoured a Church of England which aimed at including the moderate Nonconformists. His Union pursued; in a letter to Mr. Baxter, concerning his late book of national churches. … in order to comprehension which hath been forming … That the Presbyterians and Independants, that have united within themselves, may both be united also with the Church of England (1691) encouraged Parliament to produce a new act of uniformity, thus establishing a more ecumenical Church of England.'
