Somerville gained his medical education in Manchester and was RMO to St Mary's Hospital and district surgeon to Salford and Pendleton Royal Hospital and Dispensary. Somerville was later medical officer of health and public vaccinator in Wilmslow, and was also surgeon to Styal Provident Dispensary. Somerville was a fellow of the Royal Institute of Public Health.
