Hugh Arthur Sandiford, 1892-1958.

Sandiford was the first medical director of the Commonwealth Medical Advisory Bureau and of the International Medical Advisory Bureau of the BMA. He was born in Manchester on 26 May 1892 and was educated at Manchester Grammar School and the University of Manchester. After graduating, Sandiford entered the RAMC and was awarded the Military Cross in 1917 for his work on the front line. He continued working for the armed forces and after taking the Diploma in Public Health was a hygiene specialist for the army in London, Peshawar and in the Eastern Command. During the Second World War, Sandiford was invited to assume the post of Director of Army Psychiatry. In 1947, he was appointed medical director of the Medical Advisory Bureau of the BMA.. Sandiford died suddenly on 13 August 1958.
