Eileen Mary Hughes was the daughter of Dr William Hugh Hughes [junior] of Ashton-under-Lyne (see MMC/2/HughesWH). She studied at the University of Manchester. Simmons was one of the first women house physicians to be appointed at MRI, where she was later appointed cardiographic registrar. Simmons retired to Wilmslow. She was a fellow of Manchester Medical Society and a member of the Medical Women's Federation. Eileen Mary Hughes married Harry Teesdale Simmons (see below) in 1936, and practised under her married name.
