Probably the son of Norman Sweetnam (see above), Sweetnam was born in Cork and educated at the University of Manchester. He was house physician at MRI before serving as surgeon lieutenant in the RNVR during the second world war. After demobilisation, Sweetnam returned to Manchester. He took the DPH and specialised in paediatrics. Sweetnam was SMO at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. In 1952 he became consultant paediatrician at Huddersfield and Halifax, where he established successful departments of paediatrics. Sweetnam was a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and a member of the British Paediatric Association.
