Wright studied medicine at the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, graduating in 1947. He specialised in neuroanatomy and neurophysiology and held clinical and academic positions in this area in South Africa and in London. He was appointed lecturer in experimental neurology at the University of Manchester, but died shortly after taking up this post. At the time of his death, Wright had built a considerable reputation for his researches into the cerebral cortex.
