Wilson was the son of George Wilson, a former chairman of the Anti-Corn Law League. He studied at Owens College Manchester and qualified MRCS in 1875. Most of his professional career was spent in Penistone, West Yorkshire, where he was a medical officer of health for Thurlstone Urban District Council. He was the father of Stanley Rawson Wilson (see below).
