Wood was born in Bowdon, Cheshire. He studied medicine at Manchester Royal School of Medicine, and also spent spells studying in Dublin, Paris and Edinburgh. A successful student, Wood was elected to honorary staff of MRI at the age of 25 and was initially responsible for the fever wards. He resigned from the Manchester Infirmary in 1853. He later lived in Southport where he was involved in local politics and was the town's first mayor.
