Scholefield studied medicine at Oxford University and St Bartholomew's London where he was house physician. Scholefield was senior RMO to the Royal National Hospital for Consumption, Ventnor, before being appointed Tuberculosis Officer to Devon County Council. Scholefield was later appointed assistant county medical officer for Lancashire and lecturer in vital statistics at the University of Manchester. Scholefield was a member of the Society of Medical Officers of Health and a member of MMS.
