White was the son of Charles White. He studied medicine at Edinburgh, London and Leiden, taking his MD from the latter university. He was elected honorary physician at the Infirmary in 1786 and resigned in 1790, complaining of the extra staff taken on by the hospital. He helped set up the Manchester and Salford Lying-in Charity which later developed into St. Mary's Hospital. He lectured on medical subjects in Manchester in the 1780s. White died as the result of an accident in 1793.
