Young studied medicine at Sydney University and completed his medical training at the University of Manchester in 1925. An ENT specialist, he worked at the Golden Square Throat Hospital, London and was assistant surgical officer at MRI. He was later honorary surgeon in the aural department of Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and honorary surgeon at Manchester Ear Hospital. He was later a consultant in ENT at MRI, and lectured in the subject at the University of Manchester.
