Administrative / Biographical History

MRCS LRCP 1875.

Smith, the son of Edwin Smith of Preston, was born in Malta around 1855. He was apprenticed to Dr Reed, RMO of MRI, from 1870 to 1875, and was one of the last indentured apprentices at the Infirmary and also one of the last to complete all his studied at MRSM before it merged with Owens. Smith was then senior house surgeon at MRI and RMO at Monsall Fever Hospital Manchester. In 1878 Smith settled in general practice in Stretford, and developed a busy successful practice. He retired around 1908 to Altrincham then Ambleside, the home of his wife's family. During the war, he joined the staff of the Worsley Auxiliary Military Hospital, and became superintendent. Smith died on 6 October 1935.
