Watts did much of his medical training on the Continent and received a MD from the University of Pisa in 1840. He later took the MRCS in 1844 and the MD of Edinburgh University in 1848. He went into practice in Manchester, and specialised in chest diseases, notably tuberculosis. He was a physician at Ancoats and Ardwick Dispensary Manchester and was honorary physician at MRI from 1848-75. Watts was a founder of the Chatham Street Medical School in Manchester, and lectured in the practice of medicine, although he appears not to have had a great interest in teaching students.
