Smith was senior consultant ophthalmic surgeon at United Manchester Hospitals and pioneer in cataract surgery. Smith studied medicine at Guy's Hospital. He was appointed honorary surgeon to Manchester Eye Hospital in 1941, but shortly afterwards joined the RAMC as major. Smith resumed his position at the Eye Hospital after the war, and also held appointments at Booth Hall Hospital and Crumpsall Hospital. He was also honorary lecturer in opthalmology at the University of Manchester. Smith was very interested in operative surgery, and pioneered the preplaced suture technique in cataract surgery. Smith was president of the North of England Ophthalmological Society in 1963 and was a member of the Council of the Faculty of Ophthalmologists from 1956. Smith retired in 1972.
