Tomlinson gained was surgeons dresser at MRI in 1850 before gaining his medical education at the Manchester Royal School of Medicine. He was house surgeon at Ardwick and Ancoats Dispensary and at Salford Royal Hospital before being appointed surgeon to Salford and Pendleton Royal Hospital and Dispensary.
