Shanklin gained his medical qualifications from the Royal University of Ireland, after studying at Queen's College Galway and the Catholic University, Dublin. He was resident physician to the Maternity Hospital in Belfast, and his son Gilbert John Shanklin (see above) was born in Belfast in 1918. Shanklin later settled in general practice in Manchester. He died on 25 August 1934.
