These books give a pretty exact conspectus of the holders of land, tenants of cottages, in the parish of Dolwyddelan, together with estimated rental of each, rateable value etc. With a few exceptions, the whole parish was owned by the Gwydir family, then represented by Clementina Elizabeth, Baroness Willoughby D'eresby who died in 1888.

Administrative / Biographical History
The parish of Dolwyddelan was a civil as well as an ecclesiastical administrative unit. In common with other parishes it was a major instrument of local government with responsibility for poor relief, highways and law and order, which continued until reforms in the late nineteenth century. Rate books were compiled to record details of the rate paying inhabitants of a particular area. This collection relates to property holders in the parish of Dolwyddelan in Caernarfonshire, now known as the county unit of Gwynedd. In the late nineteenth century the dominant landowner in the parish was the Gwydir family, represented by Clementina Elizabeth, Baroness Willoughby D'Eresby (d. 1888).
