Scope and Content

Dearest Emily, The last act of JWWH Smith was to order a letter to be prepared to the Queen, to suggest to her the Presentation of the living of Lewisham in Kent (between Belvedore & London) to Sam Bickersteth. He had previously written to Sam to ask if he wd. accept it & the answer was yes. It is a very important living vacated by the new Bishop of Letchfield. There is a capital house & garden - £1400 a year £1000 clear - near good places of education & Sams numerous boys. A thoroughly well organised parish. Silence has been most trying to Sam for this last fortnight - We knew it also - but were pledged to absolute silence. They will have to go they think before advent. We are most thankful. Lewisham is close to Blackheath so there is the College ___ & the boys. Sam is only now [telling?] his immediate relations & its not to be made public until his [gagetted?] - I am thankful they are leaving. Belvedere on the score of health - [M?] has never suited really any of them. But they will feel it too for they have looked in & done good work indeed there - & are beloved. We go to _________next Sunday for 2 nights. There to Belvedere & on Monday & Tuesday to Chessington. Ever dearest Emily, Yr very loving sister

Julia Monier Williams

Sam went to Lewisham last Monday week & was shown it all by the B of Litchfield - But only yesterday was it really offered to him.

Paper has 'Enfield House, Ventnor, IW [Isle of Wight].' printed on it.
