Scope and Content

Explaining progress of negotiations with Women's Social & Political Union (WSPU) to hold joint peaceful demonstration of all chief Suffrage Societies to support Mr. Shackleton's Bill, as proposed at special executive committee on 25 Jun. Mrs Fawcett with two officers of the Conservative Association discussed this with Mrs and Miss Pankhurst and Mrs Pethick Lawrence. Mrs and Miss Pankhurst and Mrs Pethick Lawrence refused and would not guarantee to avoid militant action beyond 2 Jul unless date before 10 Jul had been set for second reading of Bill. Mrs Pethick Lawrence wrote on 12 Jul regretting that NJWSS would not co-operate in peaceful demonstration and urging reconsideration - misrepresenting the position as suggestion had already been refused by WSPU. Demonstration in support of Bill will be held on 9 Jul organised by National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies and London Society and all affiliated societies are asked to co-operate.
