Scope and Content

The collection comprises two ms pupil case books (3 July-7 November 1924) and ms notebook, containing lecture notes, diagrams, photographs and newspaper cuttings, compiled by Evelyn Hoare, whilst training to become a midwife at the General Lying-In Hospital in London (3 July 1924-3 April 1942), covering the following subjects: the characteristics of a good midwives, symptoms of pregnancy, hygiene during pregnancy, the different stages of labour, managing complications, such as haemorrhages during childbirth, abortion and mischarges, venereal diseases and postnatal care, together with two printed certificates awarded to her by the Central Midwives Board (1-11 October 1924), two ms case notebooks (20 November 1924-2 January 1948), two ms case registers (1 November 1924-17 April 1951) and loose case reports (13 October 1947-23 April 1952), recording the births she attended during to her subsequent career as a midwife and maternity nurse, primarily in London, Surrey, Berkshire and Oxford.

Administrative / Biographical History

Evelyn Hoare (fl. 1920-1960) trained at the General Lying-In Hospital in London, before going on to practise as a midwife primarily in South London, Surrey, Berkshire and Oxford between 1924 and 1952.
