Papers of Edith Lusting

This collection comprises an ms case book of Edith Lusting, pupil midwife at the General Lying-In Hospital, London (24 September 1939-28 April 1940), recording the personal details and pregnancy history of each patient, alongside notes and graphs, concerning the progress of each stage of their labour and puerperium, the condition of the child and the postnatal care provided, together with a printed certificate, awarded to her for completing eighteen months of training at the General Lying-In Hospital (1 June 1940). Also includes an ms register of cases that she attended during her subsequent career as a midwife around the area of Swansea, Wales (4 September 1942-3 March 1943), including the date of expected confinement, name, ages, address and pregnancy history of each patient, the date and hour of her arrival, the presentation of the child on birth, the date and hour of the birth, the sex of the infant, whether the infant was born living or dead, whether the infant was premature, the name of the doctor if called, whether there were any complications during or after labour, the date of the midwife’s last visit, the condition of the mother and child on her last visit, as well as any further remarks, including the examinations performed throughout labour and whether forceps were used during the delivery.

Edith Lusting (fl. 1930-1950) was a midwife who completed the first part of her training at the General Lying-In Hospital, London in 1940. She went on to practice around Swansea in Wales.

There is no record of the date or source of acquisition before the collection was deposited at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in May 2011.
