Papers of Harriett Simpson Cater, 1878-1936

Records relating to the training and career of Harriett Simpson Cater as a monthly nurse, including diaries with details of her services to many high-standing families, her work with eminent physicians such as Sir Francis Champneys and Sir John Williams, correspondence with family, testimonials, and photographs of herself as a midwife and some of the babies she attended.

Harriett Simpson Cater trained at University College London (1878-1880), the General Lying-in Hospital, Lambeth (1880), and the British Lying-in Hospital, Endell Street (1883). She worked with Sir John Williams, Sir Francis Champneys and Sir Thomas Barlow as a monthly nurse, attending some of the most eminent families in Britain. Her last case was in 1919.
