This collection comprises nursing and midwifery certificates, letters of recommendation, two midwives drugs book and photographs of Lillian Basant (16 September 1936-1989), relating to the training she undertook and then her subsequent career as a midwife at St. Guy's Hospital and then the Royal Northern Hospital in London, together with printed material and further photographs (13 July 1960), concerning the reopening of the Queen Mary Maternity Wing at West Sussex Hospital, where she worked as the Superintendent Midwife.

Administrative / Biographical History
Lillian Basant (fl. 1920-1990) was a nurse who commenced her midwifery training in April 1947 at Guy's Hospital, London, before transferring to the Royal Northern Hospital, London in July 1947. She qualified as a midwife in October 1947 and then obtained the Midwife Teachers Diploma from High Combe Midwife Teachers Training College in January 1954. It was after this that she went on to become the Superintendent Midwife at West Sussex Hospital, where she was involved in establishing a new maternity united, which opened in 1960. In 1989 she became an honorary member of the Royal College of Midwives.
