Scope and Content

Ms pupil case book, completed by Alice Mary Jones in the course of her training to become a midwife at New End Hospital, Hampstead (24 April-20 November 1950), recording the pregnancy history, religion and husband's occupation of each patient that she attended in childbirth, alongside detailed notes, charts and graphs of the antenatal examinations that were carried out, the progress of each stage of their labour and puerperium, including any drugs that were administered, as well as the condition of the child, the postnatal care provided and the date of discharge, together with annotated photographs, showing her in uniform, with her colleagues as well as the infants she helped deliver throughout her career as a nurse and midwife (1940-1971), also accompanied by a card, given to her on her retirement from staff of the Maternity Unit of Poole General Hospital (31 July 1971).

Administrative / Biographical History

Alice Mary Jones (fl. 1940-2002) was a midwife who trained at St. Mary's Hospital, Portsmouth and then New End Hospital, Hampstead between 1948 and 1950. During the Second World War she was part of the Voluntary Aid Detachment. She went on to work in the Maternity Unit at Poole General Hospital. She retired in 1971.
